The City of Arkadelphia will be hosting a celebration in honor of Black History Month on Monday, February 6 in the Town Hall Atrium. The celebration will begin at 10:00 a.m.
The celebration will recognize the inaugural class of Black History Month honoree’s and their families.
In this inaugural year, 12 African Americans who are from Arkadelphia or who have had made an impact on Arkadelphia will have their likenesses displayed on street banners in the downtown area.
The inaugural class was selected by a nominating committee of esteemed African Americans in the community.
The inaugural class includes:
| Mary Nell Clay | First Black Female Principal at Arkadelphia Public School District. |
| Martha Dixon | Author and Entrepreneur from Arkadelphia. |
| Carolyn Green | First Black Graduate from Ouachita Baptist University. |
| Maurice Horton, Sr. | First Black Graduate from Henderson State University. |
| Sergeant James Middleton | First Black Police Officer, First Black Sergeant in Arkadelphia. |
| Terry Nelson | First Professional Football Player from Arkadelphia. |
| John Edward Peake | Well-known Educator in Arkansas, Namesake for Peake Schools. |
| Ann Sanders | First Black Board Member for the City of Arkadelphia. |
| Reverend William Terry | Pastor and Community Activist during integration in Arkadelphia. |
| Eula Thomas | First Black Chamber of Commerce member in Arkadelphia. |
| James Williams | First Black Mayor in Arkadelphia. |
| Henry Wilson | Clark County NAACP President and Activist in Arkadelphia. |
