This training is free and will focus on how attorneys can effectively and compassionately represent survivors of domestic violence. Social workers, domestic violence survivor advocates, and members of the public are also welcome to attend this event. CLE accreditation is currently pending for this event.
Each year, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Arkansas, and Arkansas Access to Justice partner to host a three-hour CLE focusing on how attorneys can provide compassionate and effective representation to survivors of domestic violence.
This year's Power Act CLE will take place in Fayetteville from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in person at the John Paul Hammerschmidt Federal Building located at 35 East Mountain, Room 210. It will also be streamed via Zoom.
1. For the first hour, we will hear from Ashley Norman with Legal Aid of Arkansas who will discuss the Domestic Abuse Act and her work as a legal aid attorney representing survivors of domestic violence.
2. For the second hour, licensed clinical social worker, Lisa Southerland, will discuss how to be a trauma-informed lawyer.
3. The last hour will be a panel discussion moderated by Judge Barry Bryant. The panelists will include Kim Harris, Deputy Criminal Chief and Ethics Advisor for the Western District of Arkansas; Bruce D. Eddy, Federal Defender for the Western District of Arkansas; Travis Morrissey, criminal defense attorney; and Amanda Jordan, United States Probation Officer Specialist for the Western District of Arkansas. The panelists will be discussing Title 18 U.S.C. Section 3142, which is the process for holding Detention hearings in Federal Court. In particular, the part of that section pertaining to the domestic circumstances of the defendant and their family.
