Even though President Joe Biden has given clear instructions on not extending the withdrawal deadline, several questions still remain on who will be able to leave and when, CNN reported. On the day the president made this announcement, Aug. 24, 70,000 US troops had left Afghanistan, since Aug. 14. It portrays a clear picture of how quickly this mission is being carried out.
"President Biden should commit to staying in Afghanistan until we have rescued every American citizen and those Afghans who risked their lives for American troops. Instead, he intends to abandon stranded Americans to appease the Taliban and meet his own arbitrary political deadline. Joe Biden's impotence leaves Americans in harm's way and dishonors our entire nation," Sen. Tom Cotton wrote in a Facebook post.
Biden had further given some remarks acknowledging the fact that this mission's success is only possible if the Taliban cooperates with them, Aljazeera reported. In turn, he has also requested the leaders of the military to be cautious and ready with contingency options in case they have to adjust the timetable, according to CNN.
Many people, including some in Biden's own Democratic Party, have called for this withdrawal deadline to be extended. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) even stated that it is highly "unlikely" to evacuate everyone within the deadline.
Biden's handling of this evacuation has already been criticized by people all over the world. The evacuation is now being conducted at a faster pace. On Aug. 25, 19,000 people were evacuated from Kabul according to a White House official, NBC News reported.
