The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Northwest Arkansas National Airport in Highfill a $4.65 million grant to replace aging concrete on the taxiway.

Rep. Steve Womak (R-Arkansas) and Sens. John Boozman (R-Arkansas) and Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) last week announced XNA would receive the funding from the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program.

"@flyxna is a vital connector and economic engine in the community and an integral part of our region's infrastructure," Boozman wrote in a tweet. "This strategic investment will fund needed taxiway enhancements to support the airport's growth and operations."

The airport will put the money toward rehabilitating the taxiway, or the path that connects runways, which will help improve the airport's infrastructure and increase its safety.

Talk Business & Politics reported the project includes replacing about 3,200 feet of taxiway by demolishing and removing the concrete that has been in place for more than two decades.

The grant is part of a program aimed at helping with the finances for planning and development projects at airports that play a significant role in the country's air transportation.
