Students from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences were recognized for their achievements at the Association of 1890 Research Directors Biennial Research Symposium, according to an April 17 announcement.

The awards highlight the university’s focus on advancing research in agriculture, fisheries, and human sciences. The recognition is seen as a testament to both student excellence and faculty commitment to research that addresses real-world challenges.

Humphrey Wanjala, a graduate student in aquaculture and fisheries, received first place in the graduate poster presentation category for his work on animal health and production. Isaiah Atoe, an undergraduate student in the same department, earned third place in undergraduate oral presentations related to bioenergy and natural resources. Dr. Christopher C. Mathis said, “We are thrilled to see our students recognized at the 1890 Research Symposium. Their achievements highlight not only individual excellence but also the collaborative spirit and innovative research fostered here at UAPB.”

Dr. Yathish Ramena explained that Wanjala’s project focuses on developing a zebrafish model for glioblastoma research and probiotic strategies against Edwardsiellosis—a disease affecting aquaculture production—while Atoe’s study examines how different communication methods influence angler attitudes toward scientific information. “Humphrey’s research exemplifies the integration of biomedical science and aquaculture innovation,” Ramena said. “Isaiah’s research emphasizes the critical role of effective science communication in shaping public perceptions.” Dr. Bruce W. McGowan added that these efforts reflect broader priorities among land-grant institutions: “These efforts reflect the growing need for research that addresses pressing human health challenges while strengthening collaboration and expanding opportunities for student impact.”

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff operates within the University of Arkansas System according to its official website. The university competes as the Golden Lions in athletics with programs such as football according to its official website. It supports community development through outreach initiatives targeting diverse populations as reported by its official website, maintains a main campus in Pine Bluff with an additional site in North Little Rock as outlined on its official website, recognizes faculty excellence through various awards as per its official website, and maintains a faculty-to-student ratio of 15 to 1 according to its official website.
