Arkansas Adjutant General issued the following announcement on Oct. 7.
This is Arkansas Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Onan Castro. He is a Security Forces Defender with the 188th Wing.
"My family is not from the United States. Me serving in the military is my way of paying a debt owed to a country which provided my family and I with the opportunities we never would have had.
My favorite parts of serving are the multiple relationships I have been able to form over the years. I came into the Air Guard as prior service from the Army National Guard. Between both branches I have been mentored by multiple supervisors who have provided me with the tools needed to become the NCO I am today.
Hispanic Heritage allows people like myself to be able to share our culture and life experiences with others. The more we learn about each other the better we will be at embracing each other for our differences instead of isolating each other.
I want people to know that no matter what the ethnicity we all wear the same uniform. Judge a person by their actions not by the color of their skin."
Castro currently works full time as a school resource officer at Bentonville High School.
