On May 18, Politico reported around a dozen Republicans refused to wear their masks on the House floor during a vote.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to implement mask rules, sparking debate between the two parties.
Rep. Bruce Westerman (R-Arkansas), who stands behind lifting the mask requirement, released a statement on
against Pelosi and other Democrats who are supporting the mask mandate."Speaker Pelosi – it's time to end the proxy voting and put Congress back to work!" Westerman said.
Members who refuse to wear a mask are subject to large fines, according to Politico, even though the CDC's new guidelines eliminate mask restrictions for vaccinated individuals.
"Rep. Brian Mast of Florida stood up during a GOP conference meeting and told his colleagues that he’s 'done' wearing masks and will refuse to wear them on the House floor going forward, even if it means being fined, according to multiple sources in the room," stated the Politico article.
The article also says Democrats have stated they feel uncomfortable with no mask-wearing, as 112 of the 212 House Republicans did not respond to a vaccination survey.
