The White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council recently stated their opposition to projects including nuclear and carbon energy capture projects, according to The Hill.
In their report to the White House, the council stated "nuclear energy is 'an example of a type of project that will not benefit a community.'"
Rep. French Hill (R-Arkansas) took to Facebook to respond to the report.
"As a longtime proponent of nuclear energy, I find this statement shocking," Hill wrote in a May 18 Facebook post. "If the White House is serious about addressing climate change, nuclear energy should be a part of the plan as it supplied more than half of our carbon-free energy last year, not across the board and ineffective mandates like the Green New Deal."
The council's report didn't specifically state why it considers such projects to be non-beneficial, but opponents to nuclear capture have previously raised concerns about nuclear waste, The Hill reported.
Recommendations from the council are provided to inform the Biden administration's decision making, but don't necessarily reflect the views of administration policy. President Joe Biden has, in fact, promoted a carbon capture tax credit in his infrastructure plan.
Opponents to carbon capture have expressed skepticism about using unproved technology to capture greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels and argue the government shouldn’t promote the fossil fuel industry.
