Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah), will file a bill that would gradually increase the minimum wage to $15 and prohibit illegal immigrants from getting jobs, a report from The Epoch Times said.
Illegal immigrants would not be able to get jobs, as employers must verify the legal status of workers.
“Today, Americans have to compete against millions of illegal immigrants who take illegally low wages under the table. We can fix this by requiring employers to verify the legal status of every worker so they can’t undercut Americans on the black market,” Cotton wrote on Twitter.
The employment of illegal immigrants remains a sticky issue in America.
A 2018 New York Times report said that about eight of nearly 11 million immigrants unlawfully in the United States participate in the labor force. It added that this accounts for about 5 percent of all workers, according to the Pew Research Center.
The report said, however, that very few Americans are willing to take on the jobs currently held by undocumented immigrants.
Unauthorized immigrants had a large presence in production (8 percent), service (8 percent), and transportation and material moving (6percent), a 2019 Pew Research Center report said.
