Little Rock Central High School junior Samia Smith and Arkansas Virtual Academy seventh-grader Ruby Kate have been recognized by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards as the 2021 top youth volunteers in the state of Arkansas.
“We created The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards 26 years ago to highlight and support the work of young people taking on the challenges of a changing world – a mission that rings truer than ever given the events of last year,” Prudential Financial CEO Charles Lowrey said in a press release. “We are proud to celebrate the vision and determination of Spirit of Community's Class of 2021, and all the ways they're making their communities safer, healthier and more equitable places to live.”
Smith was honored for co-leading a student organization focused on gun violence education while Kate was honored for helping raise money to grant wishes for nursing home residents. Both will be given a $2,500 scholarship, a silver medallion and an invitation to attend a virtual celebration of their work in April. They are part of 102 state honorees and have the opportunity to be chosen as one of top 10 national honorees at the celebration.
Prudential Financial holds the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards each year in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
