Tyson Foods has created a new career development program, dubbed Upward Pathways, to work with frontline workers in its facilities on job skills training and workforce certifications.

Upward Pathways will begin as a pilot program at 10 of the company’s plants, with the first implementation at the Council Bluffs, Iowa case-ready beef and pork facility, according to a Tyson Foods press release.

The effort involves partnerships with community colleges and other adult education providers, according to the release. Training within the program will be provided at no cost to the employees who are enrolled, and will culminate with a Tyson-branded credential applicable to advancement within the company.

“The goal of Upward Pathways is to identify and grow the untapped talent in our frontline workforce,” Anson Green, who is leading the program, said in the release. “The program represents a strategic effort to bolster career advancement efforts by maximizing the expertise, loyalty and powerful diversity of our frontline workers. The approach leverages our community-based partnerships to deliver education, training and supportive services aimed at increasing the competitiveness of our team members for advancement opportunities.”

Green served for seven years as director for Arkansas’ Adult Education and Literacy program, prior to coming to work for Tyson Foods in 2020, according to the release.

“Our team members are the most important part of our business, and we view it as our responsibility to provide opportunities to grow and thrive in their careers,” John Tyson, Tyson Foods CSO, said in the release. “We’re excited to launch Upward Pathways as the next step from Upward Academy, which has seen tremendous success in providing resources to team members to help them take control of their own development and professional growth.”

Upward Academy offers training along the lines of English as a second language, high school completion, obtaining citizenship and digital and financial literacy, according to the release.
