One of the responsibilities of representing Arkansas in the U.S. Senate is nominating students to the nation’s military service academies, according to U.S. Senator John Boozman. These nominations are required for entry into institutions such as the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Senator Boozman explained that each academy has its own selection process but all require a nomination from a member of Congress or the Vice President. He offered advice for prospective applicants: “First, start early. Applying to the academies is not the same as applying to a traditional college or university. You will need academic records, recommendations, medical records, fitness tests and other requests that are unique to entry at a military school.”
He recommended that students begin preparing during their junior year of high school by reviewing requirements and opening application files with any academies they are interested in. Participating in summer programs hosted by each academy between junior and senior year can also help candidates demonstrate commitment and determine if academy life suits them.
For seniors who may be learning about these opportunities later in their high school career, Senator Boozman said there is still time to apply but urged prompt action due to upcoming deadlines.
He emphasized the importance of seeking nominations from both senators and one representative serving an applicant’s district: “It is strongly recommended you request nominations from each office that serves you – two Senators and one Representative – to give you the best chance of success. Every Member can only nominate a small number of students and applying with each of your representatives can increase the competitiveness of your application.”
The deadline for nomination applications through Senator Boozman’s office is November 1; more information and applications are available on his website.
Senator Boozman also suggested applying for national ROTC scholarships concurrently with academy applications since much of the required documentation overlaps.
“I am looking forward to meeting this year’s applicants from Arkansas and doing all I can to support their willingness to become military leaders in our nation,” he said. “I hope any interested candidates will reach out to my office and apply.”
