U.S. Senator John Boozman was honored with the Lifetime of Excellence Award by the Arkansas Optometric Association, according to a May 16 statement. The award recognizes Boozman’s career in optometry, his public service, and his advocacy for patient access to vision care.
The recognition highlights Boozman’s longstanding commitment to improving eye health and supporting the optometry profession. His work as both an optometrist and a lawmaker has impacted families in Arkansas and across the nation.
“It is an honor to be recognized by my fellow optometrists dedicated to improving eye health and ensuring optometry remains a viable and rewarding profession,” said Boozman. “Serving families in Arkansas over many years was a privilege and showed me the importance of protecting access to high-quality care. Now as a lawmaker, I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue driving policies that support providers while advancing vision health for patients across America.”
Matt Burns, Executive Director of the Arkansas Optometric Association, said: “Senator Boozman has left an indelible mark on optometry and patient care not only in Arkansas, but throughout the country. We are excited to honor him and to recognize his decades of service to the profession and the state.”
Boozman co-founded an eye-care practice with his brother in Northwest Arkansas that became a major regional provider offering comprehensive vision services. He also established a low vision program at the Arkansas School for the Blind in Little Rock, supported low-income families, and provided care during mission trips abroad. After completing pre-optometry studies at University of Arkansas, he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry in 1977.
As a member of Congress, Boozman has advocated for legislation aimed at expanding access to care, strengthening physician reimbursement rates, supporting children’s vision services, aiding underserved populations, enhancing services for servicemembers with combat-related eye injuries, as well as improving eye care benefits under Medicare and Medicaid programs.
The award was presented during ArOA’s convention recognizing individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership or contributions within optometry.
