The Little Rock Trojans defeated the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros 15-10 on April 22, completing a midweek sweep at Gary Hogan Field.
The game saw a high-scoring contest, with both teams producing strong offensive performances. The victory follows three conference wins for Little Rock over the weekend and adds momentum as they prepare to return to Ohio Valley Conference play.
Little Rock head coach Chris Curry said, “This was a great homestand — a sweep that started with three conference games over the weekend and a midweek over a really good program in UTRGV. They have a good lineup and ran some arms out there today with really good stuff.”
After falling behind 7-2 in the second inning, Little Rock responded by scoring six runs in the third inning to take control of the game. Key contributions came from Nolan Freund, Ty Rhoades, Ryan Geck, Cooper Chaplain, and Jerdy Lopez during this rally. Lopez said, “I’ve been working on making solid contact and was looking for that outside pitch so I didn’t roll it over.” He finished the day going 5-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Catcher Trey Hill commented on his team’s depth behind the plate: “I think it’s one of the most talented catching groups we’ve had here. We all believe in each other. We’re competing for time, but we’re also supporting each other because at any moment, you’ve got to be ready to go.” On the mound, Luke Schimmels earned his third win of the season by providing stability after an early deficit.
The Trojans have now scored 20 runs across their last two games as they look ahead to their next series against Lindenwood starting Friday evening. Curry said about preparing for upcoming games: “We’ve got to get back to work and be ready for the road. Runs can be tough to come by in that park, and we’ve got a few things to clean up.”
