The Izard County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 8 that it is encouraging residents and visitors to prioritize safety during the upcoming summer season. The agency highlighted the increased risks associated with more travel, community events, and time spent outdoors as temperatures rise.
With schools nearing their summer break, many families are expected to travel for vacations. The Sheriff’s Office said drivers should obey traffic laws, stay attentive, and remain vigilant to help reduce accidents and keep roadways safe.
The announcement also addressed the dangers of extreme heat, defined as periods of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees lasting for two to three days or more. During such conditions, people are at greater risk for heat-related illnesses. The office provided several recommendations: “Check local weather updates regularly; drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated; ensure pets have access to cool water and shade when outdoors; limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours; never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles; take cool showers or baths to lower body temperature; watch for signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke; wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and apply sunscreen.” For additional information on preparing for extreme heat or recognizing symptoms of illness related to high temperatures, residents are directed to Ready.gov.
The Izard County Sheriff’s Office enhances community safety through dedicated law enforcement programs and operates a state-of-the-art detention center in Melbourne along with a station in Horseshoe Bend. It patrols an area covering 547 square miles across all of Izard County in Arkansas while collaborating with local and state agencies on public safety efforts—all according to the official website.
“All of us at the Sheriff’s Office wish everyone a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer,” the statement concluded.
