Heifer International announced on May 8 the publication of “Breaking the Global Poverty Trap,” a book authored by its former President and CEO, the late Pierre Ferrari. The book shares insights from Ferrari’s leadership at Heifer from 2010 to 2022 and outlines his practical approach to global development.

The topic is significant as it addresses ongoing questions about why extreme poverty continues despite large investments worldwide. The book proposes that traditional approaches often fail because they do not enable true economic participation for those in need.

Ferrari offers what he calls a “pro-poor, wealth-creating, value chain” approach. According to Heifer International, “At its core, this model focuses on building social capital, strengthening technical skills, enabling collective action, and ensuring that smallholder farmers and rural entrepreneurs can access higher-value markets.” The organization also said this method aims for long-term resilience rather than short-term relief.

The book includes examples from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Heifer International said: “Breaking the Global Poverty Trap illustrates what many across Heifer have witnessed firsthand: sustainable change happens when communities are empowered to lead. When people have the tools, knowledge and networks they need, they move beyond survival to build thriving, self-sustaining livelihoods.” These principles shaped changes within Heifer during Ferrari’s tenure.

The work of Heifer International is further supported by initiatives such as the Heifer Ranch Center for Regenerative Agriculture. This center contributes to community vitality by providing tools for small-scale farmers to build resilient operations; it features a 1,200-acre campus with livestock zones and educational resources; it functions as an initiative of Heifer USA within the broader organization; it assists farmers in adopting practices that restore soil and biodiversity; and serves as a living laboratory with hands-on learning opportunities available both on-site and virtually worldwide—all according to the official website.
