Razorback associate head coach Gustavo Morantes was named on Apr. 15 as one of five finalists for the 2026 Jan Strickland Outstanding Division I Assistant Coach Award, according to an announcement by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

The Jan Strickland Award is given each year to an NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA or NJCAA assistant coach who has excelled in working with student-athletes both athletically and academically. The recognition highlights Morantes’s contributions to the Arkansas Razorbacks men’s golf program since joining for the 2023-24 season.

Morantes is joined as a finalist by Dustin Groves (Virginia), Noah Goldman (North Carolina), Jace Long (LSU), and James Vargas (Texas Tech). He leads Arkansas’s recruiting efforts, with the upcoming class ranked ninth nationally by Golf Channel. This class includes two top-25 global recruits: Lev Grinberg at No. 13 and Guus Lafeber at No. 21. In his first year, Morantes helped secure the nation’s fourth-ranked recruiting class.

Since Morantes joined Arkansas, the team has won six events—including three this season—after only two wins in the previous four years. Through nine events this year, Arkansas ranks seventh in NCAA/Scoreboard rankings and has finished among the top three teams six times.

Individual players have also seen improvement under Morantes’s guidance. Erich Fortlage leads with a scoring average of 70.85 and Gerardo Gomez follows at 70.92; both have improved significantly in World Amateur Golf Rankings during their time at Arkansas.

In academics, Arkansas maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.261, including a fall semester GPA of 3.321; every semester since Morantes arrived has seen at least a team GPA of 3.0.
