Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) has introduced new legislation aimed at prohibiting camping on public property in Washington, DC. The bill, titled the Prohibiting Encampments on Public Grounds Act, seeks to make it illegal to set up or maintain camps or temporary shelters on public grounds in the nation’s capital.

“Our nation’s capital should be a point of pride, not littered with homeless encampments that endanger visitors like the thousands of Arkansans who visit each year. This bill would clean up DC’s public property and allow law enforcement officials to maintain order in the streets of our nation’s capital,” said Senator Cotton.

The full text of the proposed legislation is available online. If enacted, the measure would grant law enforcement greater authority to address vagrancy camps within city limits.
