Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) has introduced new legislation aimed at increasing penalties for migrants convicted of fraud. The proposed Welfare Fraud Deterrence and Recovery Act seeks to address concerns about the misuse of taxpayer funds by imposing stricter consequences on noncitizens involved in fraudulent activities.

“Migrants who steal Arkansas taxpayer dollars by committing fraud shouldn’t be let off with just a slap on the wrist. My bill will ensure these criminals face harsher consequences,” said Senator Cotton.

The bill includes several provisions: it would set mandatory minimum sentences for noncitizens found guilty of fraud, allow for automatic and expedited deportation of those convicted, and expand grounds for denaturalization to include welfare fraud committed after gaining citizenship. Additionally, the act proposes the creation of a federal “Fraud Recovery Task Force” responsible for pursuing civil suits to recover funds, including interest, and coordinating efforts across state lines and internationally to address larger schemes.
