Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana have introduced the Ratepayer Affordability and Transparency in Energy (RATE) Act. The proposed legislation aims to reduce energy prices for Americans by promoting grid reliability and preventing states from enacting mandates that require the use of renewable energy sources, which they argue increase electricity costs.
“State requirements for less reliable, renewable energy sources, shouldn’t lead to higher energy costs for Arkansans. My bill would ensure those mandates don’t impact energy prices,” said Senator Cotton.
Senator Sheehy stated, “Americans voted to make energy affordable, accessible, and reliable again. The RATE Act is a commonsense bill to strengthen our grid and lower costs for hardworking families across the country.”
The bill seeks to safeguard grid reliability by overriding state climate mandates such as renewable portfolio standards if they interfere with infrastructure planning or raise electricity prices. It also aims to ensure that Americans pay the lowest possible cost for their electricity.
