Arkansas Northeastern College hosted “Living the Legacy” on February 23, 2023, to celebrate Black History Month. The Adams/Vines Recital Hall was packed with local officials, pastors, community members, and students.

Dr. Blanche Hunt, Vice President for Community Relations, welcomed the crowd before Sucess Navigator Willie D. Williams, Jr. introduced the event’s emcee, Pastor Ryan Martin of Wellspring Church. Pastor Archie Thomas of Living Word C.O.G.I.C. brought the invocation.

The keynote speaker for “Living the Legacy” was James W. Sanders. The former Blytheville mayor inspired and imparted wisdom to the crowd and left attendees with the challenge to be the change they want to see.

Dorothy Erby’s rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was powerful and stirring. The musical performances by the Blytheville Elementary, Blytheville High School, and Osceola High School choirs and the expressive dance by members of Faith Temple House of Prayer, were inspiring. KIPP, Gosnell, and Blytheville Elementary students submitted artwork that was displayed in the Adams/Vines Gallery.

ANC President Dr. James Shemwell closed the event by speaking about the progress that the College has made over the past decade in closing the achievement gap and quadrupling graduation rates for African American students.
