The fifth-ranked Arkansas men’s golf team finished the first day of the Mountaineer Invitational in third place at six under par (570) after two rounds, according to an April 13 update from the program. The tournament is being held at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia.

Arkansas led after the first round with a nine-under-par 279 but shot three over in the afternoon session. Host West Virginia and Clemson moved ahead during the second round, finishing at nine under and eight under respectively.

The afternoon was marked by shifting leads among the top teams. Arkansas held a six-shot advantage after 18 holes and briefly extended its lead on the back nine with a series of birdies from Gerardo Gomez, Thomas Curry, and John Daly II. Gomez’s three consecutive birdies put him into first place individually during that stretch.

By day’s end, Gomez stood third overall at five under par. Curry was tied for thirteenth at two under, Daly tied for nineteenth at even par, and Smith tied for twenty-fourth at one over par. The team standings saw Texas Tech and Oklahoma State rounding out the top five behind Arkansas.

Preston Stout of Oklahoma State led all individuals with an eight-under total (69-67), while Thomas Higgins of Clemson was second at seven under (71-66). The tournament will conclude Tuesday with one final round scheduled.
